A murmuration of starlings...

We often see groups of starlings doing their aerobatics at this time of year. but not on this scale....

I never tire of watching this.....

  1. Wonderful - and very bizarre - what Do they all think they are doing?

  2. Mr K, it's all to do with winter flocking behaviour. Have you not been following Autumn Watch over the years? but isn't it just fascinating to watch?

  3. Breathtaking - it's even better in real life.

  5. The starling show over the old West Pier in Brighton used to be very impressive but then I saw the flocks above the Central Railway Station in Rome. Wow. We stood there (along with dozens of other people) for half an hour or more absolutely mesmerised. Fantastic. (Oh, and thanks for the Blotanical Fave - by the way)!

  6. 'Murmuration' is a very good word but never feels dramatic enough for starlings en masse.

  7. Our starlings tend to perform in small, select groups. Dave, You do need lots and lots for an impact.

Esther, you,re just the person to come up with a more suitable word for a lot of starlings. You could give "murmuration" a new meaning at the same time....

  8. Janet, I have seen footage like this before and I agree it really is breathtaking.
I got your message saying you had difficulty adding my blog to your list. I wish I knew myself what the problem is as others may be having difficulty with my site regarding other issues. I see that it still didn't add to your list, I thank you very much for having a go, really appreciate it. alistair

  11. I love starlings. We get quite a lot sitting on the electricity wires behind our garden at this time of year waiting to go of to their roost. We keep meaning to go down to Somerset to see the famous display but as yet have not got round to it.

  12. What is spooky about it, janet? Is it that they seem to move in unison without banging into each other or is it because it's like a swarm?

Wellywoman. If you get the chance to see one of the really big displays south you should go... and record it for the rest of us!

  14. It's amazing that they can coordinate their flight patterns the way they do. We get big flocks of Grackles here in the winter that are impressive when they fly in to feed or roost at night, but we don't have anything of the scale on the video either!

  15. Wow, that's amazing! How beautiful. The patterns almost remind me of the Northern lights.

  16. It is amazing to watch isn't it?

Sweetbay, what's a Grackle? I\ll have to google that one.

Indie, Aurora Borealis are one of the wonders of nature (along with the starlings). We were lucky enough to see them a few times when we lived in Orkney.
