A Gremlin in the works....

This was going to be a post about our apple harvest. This is a photograph of the early pickings using P's camera.  There is a problem with the zoom but it works well enough.

So this was one of several photos of apples.
Then the new camera arrived. Consign the box brownie, the Panasonic Lumix (with the faulty zoom) and the Canon Ixus to the box marked "waiting for repair" and get out the brand new Nikon D3100.
And here it is...

So do we  have all the bits that we need?

The camera with zoom lens, a set of filters (see Scott 's helpful post at Rhone Street Gardens) a hood (see Shirley's excellent post about her cameras at Shirl's Garden Watch) a little brush (to clean the lens) and a puffer thing (also for cleaning).  P thought we needed both!

All this was three days ago....

I managed to take some "not bad" photos ie the subject was in focus and then I managed to wipe the lot. It was all too, too easy. To delete that is. Just press the "delete " button more than twice and bobs your uncle or press the wrong button in the menu, reformat the chip and there you go.... literally.

The Nikon is big and heavy after my little Canon Ixus, which fitted in the palm of my hand or slipped it into my pocket on the way out of the door.

It's going to take a while to trawl through the manuals and get used to the Nikon. In the meantime I'm still trying to get my old camera fixed. So please bear with me and we might get some more photos next time...

Getting back to the apples. You'll have to picture the scene. Jars of sticky, spicy chutney lined up in the cupboard, jelly bags suspended over bowls, apple pies with crispy topping, crystal clear jugs of fresh apple juice ready for breakfast.

Well it may not have looked quite like that but imagination is a wonderful thing!

  1. Oh I love my Canon Ixus. It goes with me everywhere. We have a Pentax digital SLR but I find it a real pain to lug around.

  2. I have ONE apple remaining after the wind (not that I ever have more than a dozen). So word pictures are all I'll ever have....

  3. Congratulations on the new camera! (And the apple harvest, of course.) Even without the photos, you conjured up the smell of apples baking--enough that I'm going to raid the refrigerator for raw one now.

  4. Ooh shiny. I've been thinking of splashing out on a DSLR.

  5. Sage Butterfly I'm sure I just need to take my time and lean to use the Nikon... I always wanted one!

I love my Canon Ixus too, Linda so I must get it repaired. So far the estimates have been really high. I may as well save my pennies and get a new one!

Kinivie, if you want some apples you know (roughly) where we are. I'm getting skunnered with them..

I'm slightly worried by comments such as impressive" and "shiny" and "congratulations". At the moment I feel like Linda I love my Canon Ixus!
Never mind I'll soon be saying I love my Nikon D3100! Doesn't have the same ring to it, somehow...

  6. Hi Janet,

I hope you get used to your new camera soon; they're always a bit daunting at first but not to worry, you'll soon get the hang of it. Especially as all you need to do it have it on an automatic setting to begin with before you learn more about it.

  7. It does help to have automatic setting, Liz. But I'm such a novice I forgot to take the lens cap off at one point!!!!

  8. I am chuckling away, picturing the pantry you wish you had LOL. My best wishes for a successful transition to the new camera. When I got my Rebel XT, I had roughly the same experience. It took me months to get used to it, mainly because I kept going back to the old unreliable camera out of frustration. One day I decided to read the manual. (Seriously... what a concept!)

I've had it since 2004 and my husband has offered to get me a better camera and I have a four word answer for him> Not in this lifetime!

  9. Learning your way around a new camera can be so distressing - but I am betting that you will fall in love with it, given time. Any which way, I shall be watching your progress with it as I am thinking about saving up for a DSLR myself. I keep getting lens envy... And in the mean time you can comfort yourself with delicious apple pie with apple chutney...

  11. Janet, that's a might beast, when you and it are proper chums you'll love it. I've a nikon d70s (not as posh) as your and I am still learning with it. Or rather it's still trying to teach me. Been there with the delete all thing. Eek. Apples look ace.

I also thought 't other Janet has an dslr........

  12. at some point I'd like to upgrade my point-and-shoot Ricoh to a 'real' camera with big I-can-spot-you lens. Just looking at yours I get anxious - especially if it deletes at touch off button. Am sure you'll soon get acquainted Janet - meanwhile I can picture the conversion of the apples into home madey delicious sticky things.

  13. Nope, not a DSLR, I've got a compact superzoom - Panasonic Lumix FZ30. No lens changing, but it does come with a 35mm to 240 mm lens which has always kept me happy. Recently, with more of an interest in macro shots, and wide angle landscape shots, I lust after the greater flexibility of a full DSLR. A girl can dream!
