And the next post is ...

Number 222!
There's a repetition and symmetry about these numbers that appeals to me.
It's a coincidence that this post also falls on first anniversary of this blog which I started on 13 February 2011. Truth be told I'm a bit surprised that I'm still doing it. P is even more surprised...At least the blog hasn't fallen by the wayside on a tide of good intentions...
Looking back the content of the  blog has changed quite a lot. I would even like to think it has evolved into something more interesting than a record of the weather in the east of Scotland. Maybe I should let others be the judge of that. What was a diary or an "aide memoire"   is now bits about the garden, photos (lots) and other bits and bobs. It's an eclectic mix...

I decided to look back and see what interested other people. A wee trawl through the stats showed that top of the posts was..

Radical Action Part 2: A Touch of Spice.
Gratifying to know that it was actually something about gardening!
This post was about the overhaul of one of the borders and the addition of late summer colour. It went from tasteful whites and pinks and lilacs to zingy oranges and yellows and greens.

A close second in terms of popularity turned out to be "The Dung Fly and the Stinky Mushroom".
Some of you might have thought that this was just an opportunity to put up photos of a questionable subject matter...

But I have become fascinated by images of fungi and there is an ever increasing archive of  photos. Plans are afoot to join in a fungi ramble with an expert this year in order to identify a few more.

Looking at Statistics or "reading the runes" were of great interest to this blogger for a while. You can only read so much into them (or not as the case may be).

There was one statistic that I would like to share with you. I'd like to call it a "Rash of Russians"  One day some time back there were over 400 visits. That was unusual...
And even more unusual was that most of them were from Eastern Europe. The answer may be the title of the post at the time. "St Cyrus" is a saint in the Russian Orthodox Church. They must have been a bit surprised to find a Nature Reserve rather than the saint they were looking for.

When I started Planticru Notes I had a rather precious notion that I was doing it just for me. Then I discovered that it was really good to know that you're talking to other often like minded people. That gives the whole exercise a different complexion and a bit more substance. I am not alone...

I've also had the opportunity to meet up with Penny at Little Herb Farm and Shirley at
Shirls Gardenwatch. That was a delight.

There are other birthday blogs around. Dave at "The Anxious Gardener" and Papaver at "The Blackberry Garden"  and Ca at Foxglove Lane are all downing the champagne and painting the garden red.

So here's to another year blogging about a garden in Montrose.....perhaps....

Triptych is by Frances Pelly.

  3. 222, Janet! Well done, you. Ah, yes, the dung fly and the stinky mushroom. That was an entertaining one... I always enjoy coming here, because I never know what I'll find--a gorgeous walk in the woods or by the water, lichens or mushrooms, a day in the life of your chooks, or a view of your beautiful garden. (I've just visited some of your earliest posts--wow. You've accomplished a LOT in that garden!) I would miss you horribly if you stopped blogging, so here's to another year!

  5. Congratulations Janet! It's always interesting whenever a blogger looks back and sees how much they have evolved after blogging for quite some time :)

When good things are good you just have to share them :)

  7. A very happy blogaversary, Janet!

I'm afraid my stats show that my most popular post was the one entitled "Whose Poo?" (about bird droppings in the garden, before you ask). I am a bit concerned about what that says about the readers of my blog ...

  8. Happy Blogaversary! And congratulations on 222 posts! I like how blogs evolve and change, much as our gardens do. Stats always seem to confuse me. I'm impressed you realized the where and why of your "Rash of Russians"!

  9. Hi Janet~
Congrats on your first year. You write like a pro and I would never have guessed your blog was only one year old. I like the part about writing to other gardeners. Yes, it does give us a good reason to know what we are talking about.(smile) I've only been corrected once and that was not 'flamed' at me, just asking about the correct Latin term. Gardeners are a nice sort of audience.
I love the part about the Russian Invasion Day. LOL
My blog's secret statistic which I can't figure out is this:
I have someone who visits my blog EVERY DAY from a tiny town in Iowa! IOWA of all places. I cannot imagine the reason for this daily visit, but it does make me try to write interesting stuff. :0)

I guess we never know who will enjoy our garden. I certainly enjoy yours! I'm in the middle of year two and was worried about running out of things to write about. Then the drought hit and we got chickens. Both kept me busy all last year. Hope you don't get a drought to write about! Ugh!
Here's to a wonderful year two for your garden blog in Scotland.

  10. Dear Janet - Apparently it's a good sign to have the law of threes working on the 2s. I'm just happy to have found your blog and have enjoyed the diversity in double helpings of your writing, gardening knowledge and skills with the lens. Happy blogoversary :)

  13. Happy Anniversary Janet! Like you I didn't ever really expect to get in to the conversations - friendships even - that blogging has led to. Rather wonderful really, and I for one am glad you didn't give up, and hope you carry on for another year, at least!!

  14. Yay… I’m able to leave a comment this time! Spotted this post on your anniversary and disappointed when I couldn’t leave my congrats comment then :-(

It was a delight for me too… to meet you. I took a long drive that day hoping I would get a chance to chat to you… and I did. Met you both too :-D

I hear you on the chatting and contact with like-minded people. I was blogging to post videos and pics of Scotland with snow not expecting to go past that 1st winter… how wrong was I!!

Looking forward to keeping up with your posts in 2012 and to perhaps catching up with you on a garden visit?
