Beautiful photos, Orchids are lovely blooms to have :)
Also, on a side note; it looks like we have the exact same bathroom! heehee, we have those tiles with the little border too. Or at least something very similar.
Liz, what good taste in tiles we both have.... I did start start playing around with the photos in Photoshop but thought in the end that they looked best the way the were.
I'm surprised you've never been given one as a present Kelli. I said at some point how much I liked them (and I do) so instead of wine friends brought an orchid.
Just about the sexiest blooms I've seen Janet and glad you kept the purity of capture without photoshopping! Wondering how much light is in your bathroom - not out of curiosity but for the sake of the orchids!
It's a north facing bathroom, Laura so there's not a lot of direct sunlight. It seems to be the best place in the house for them. I have had a lot of orchids over the years so it's been a bit of trial and error. This one is on it's second flowering!
Orchids' lips are always very beautiful, no matter what species they are. It is one reason I am dying to have a macro lens, which i still cannot afford. I have many orchids in the past, which my nature of work limited its success. Now there are only a very few dwindling stalks remain.
Pretty photos. So refreshing to imagine ourselves in climates where such flowers would be growing about the path as we stroll through the greenery. If only...
I was given an orchid as a house warming present and it was very beautiful. It flowered for about 6 months but I managed never to get it to flower again. I know they need a spell of cooler conditions in the autumn to trigger flowering. I love going to any of the gardens with tropical glasshouses and seeing all the different orchids in bloom, they are such a varied species.
They do need a spell of cool for a repeat performance. I have a friend that has one in a basement window. (it is well lit) and it's been there for years and is enormous compared to mine. He's swears it thrives on neglect!
I think flowers are amazing. I tend to look at the flower and plant as a whole rather than the intricate, stunning flower details. Thanks for expanding my view. You inspire me.
I've have both books; Orchid Fever and The Orchid Thief. So you aren't scared of orchids like me? I admire those who can grow them and get them to bloom.
You've done a beautiful job capturing their allure. They do seem beautifully otherworldly.
I too have the books, David and I went to a talk about caring for orchids. It's easy , the expert said! I have managed a reflower with a couple of this Phalaenopsis type. It's just down to the right watering and light conditions, isn't it? As long as I get given them as presents I'll keep on trying....
Janet - lovely Phalaenopsis, looks like it has a lot of the species amabilis in its background, but is almost certainly a hybrid. :) For those of you wondering how to keep these alive, I wrote a post about it a little while ago on my blog - http://orchids-on-a-balcony.blogspot.com/2012/01/how-to-grow-phalaenopsis-orchid-blog.html Good luck with your plant! :)
James, i'm sure you are right about it being a hybrid. I would like to keep at least one cymbidium which I've also had as presents but managed to kill. Thanks for the info about your blog.
Long ago, in a time of my life far, far away, I tried and failed with orchids. Those ethereal blooms make me think I might try again--thanks for inspiration!
Absolutely stunning, I'm still enjoying my white one which started flowering in November.
ReplyDeleteI have to admit that I have been given a lot of orchids over the years and most have died (or I killed them). I do like them enormously.
DeleteDitto, I love them also.. but keep forgetting to water them ... have 3 on the go at the moment.. perhaps they will survive..
DeleteThey also need a bit of light, Crocosmia.

DeleteWhat a beautiful plant. I always admire orchid, and I've never had one (maybe one of these days!).

ReplyDeleteThese photos were taken with a small Canon camera with an inbuilt macro lens. Nothing fancy, Andrea

DeleteI feel like a bumble bee lured into a tunnel of light and beauty. Shared it on FB.
ReplyDeleteKaren, thank you. I'm not on FB myself any more so it was good of you to share it.

ReplyDeleteI hadn't really looked at them close-up before. It sometimes takes a camera to start to see things.
DeleteThose are very, very beautiful... I'm not really a fan, but you may be converting me....
ReplyDeleteTime to be converted....

ReplyDeleteI have tried and failed with orchids so many times, Linnie. Our house was a graveyard for orchids...
DeleteReally lovely gentle peaceful photos. I think you enjoyed taking these!! I can almost smell them:~)
ReplyDeleteThe flowers are very delicate and soft with just the zany colour in the orchid throat.
