Jobbing gardeners....

It's  fun to go off to someone else's garden for a change and to do a bit of work, especially if they are terribly grateful and feed us well. Add to that extremely comfortable accommodation, an idyllic setting and  good company.
You could hardly call it work, more of a gentle potter.

The garden is very different to ours...well there is  grass for one thing, (enough to need a sit-on lawn mower) a large pond with frogs and newts and  a hilly bit of woodland which supports foxes badgers, deer and a host of bird life.

It's great fun to watch the camera in the morning to see what animals were about.

This is the main part of the garden and slopes gently away from the house. The landscaping of the pond and the mound behind were done by a previous owner. The height was achieved by building up a mound with rubbish. This has caused real problems as it's now full of vinca and other weeds such as Rosebay willow herb and couch grass. Added to this is the horrible lumpy clay soil and planting becomes  difficult.

On the other side of the path the bank Mare's tail is much in evidence. It does look good in the edges of the water  and makes a great place for aquatic wildlife.

Our friends C and P have made trojan efforts to parts of the mound  and cut back some of the shrubs. They then made pockets of better soil for planting new hardy perennials in. If it had been me I think I would have cleared the mound away altogether! bring on the digger....

Anyway back to the pottering...

There were raised beds to fill with vegetables, pots and boxes to fill with herbs and annuals. Some of the perenials had been in their pots for a while and needed divided or re-potted as well as a bit of weeding here and there. These are some of the collection of plants to be dealt with...

With the glorious weather it was a joy to get up early in the morning to watch the mist disappear as the sun broke through. It is a wonderfully tranquil spot - a real retreat!

Fortified by cup of coffee, I got planting. P joined me later to do the hanging baskets. This is not my forte at all but having seen some wonderful examples in the latest "Gardens Illustrated" I may be tempted to give it a go...

In the end we this is what we achieved...planters full of herbs (apart from French tarragon which C doesn't like)

A raised border planted with broad beans, peas and salad crops.

With a bit of luck we might be invited back for another potter and the best tiramisu in the North East of Scotland.

  1. Hi,

How beautiful! Wish I had so much garden to play with :)

Also very annoying when what looks to be a wonderful border/garden turns out that underneath it's a very different story! I have that a lot here, every time I dig, I'm never sure exactly what I'll find underneath - lovely soil, terrible soil with bricks, wood and all manner of rubbish in or solid yellow clay. Sadly the first option is a rarity.

  2. What a super garden to potter in and aren't they lucky to have a friend like you to help them! All the herbs in their planters look really good, they will soon be producing prolifically along with the veg in the raised bed. Can anyone help with all my pots!!

  3. What lucky people to have you working so hard in their garden - and it does look really interesting. The planters look lovely; they should be really productive...

  4. They really did a lot of job there. I prefer to put all my plants on the ground, if i can have my choice.

  7. The garden looks fabulous, no wonder you spend some good time there, even weeding, especially if in good company! I've also been impressed about the Gardens Illustrated pots arrangements but let me tell you that the thing that I am going to remember (and maybe copy!) is that artichoke in a terracotta pot. I think it's brilliant!

  10. I made tiramisu for a dinner party recently but such a huge amount we were eating it for days. The thought of it still makes me a little queasy! Badgers in the garden? They must do some damage, no? Fine hat by the way. D

  11. I really must find some friends who garden (none of mine do, lack of space, lack of time or just no inclination, philistines!!!). I have just about exhausted my own gardening space, so to be able to help in someone else's occasionally would be lovely, especially if they had such a beautiful spot as your friends'. I had to build raised beds in part of my garden, the ground left by previous building work meant it was impossible to grow directly into it. What better way to finish off the day, with tiramisu.

  12. What a lovely friend you are. A very satisfying job by the look of it too. Better than digging out Mare's tail

  13. We are the very lucky friends that J&P worked their magic on. It was a lovely weekend that has left two abiding memories for me - firstly getting up at 8am and finding a 'fairy' had been up at the crack of dawn and done all sorts of wonderful things in the garden - then gone back to bed to warm up! The second was looking through the lounge window to see P wielding a sledge hammer in the flower bed - the offending huge lump of concrete was eventually removed and a hellebore now has a roomy home. Big THANK YOU J&P - you are always welcome!

  15. My kind of fun! I love your friend's garden and all the new plants they've chosen. You're a good friend to help them out.
I too have to make pockets for some of my plants. Mostly I have to add a full dose of compost so that the roots can get enough water all summer.
    Nice post.

  16. What a lovely idea. I've been thinking for a while about getting some gardening friends together for the occasional day working in each other's gardens, perhaps with lunch thrown in. It's much more fun to garden with other people, I think.

  17. as others have said lucky friends, I like all their planters and the raised be too, such a lot of pot plants to sort out, Frances

  18. Maybe your friends could pull out all the plants on the mound, build a dry stone wall to waist height around its edges and fill it in completely, a mere afternoons work :)

  19. Sounds as if everyone got a good deal out of that - I like the bones of the garden, though I, like you, would be itching to take a digger to the mound and re-do it sans weeds and clumpy soil...

  20. I like the look of that raised bed. I guess it's easy to throw a net over the posts to protect from marauders too.
